Upcoming Programs

November 27 10AM, we’ll ponder a religious question which torments Unitarian Universalists more than any other religious tradition: “Do We Worship or Celebrate or What?” When speaking about what we do here on Sunday mornings, different people respond differently to different terminology. Some want more “spiritual” language, while some don’t want anything of the sort. Rev. Dennis McCarty will ponder the practices and words by which we might connect to that which is greater than we are.

December 4th 10AM, America is becoming more and more diverse with each day. For some, this multiculturalism is welcomed, and for others, it's unfamiliarity is disconcerting. For many, America's Muslim population is in particular causing fear. But why? Who are our Muslim neighbors and what does Islam say about multiculturalism? More generally, what will it take for multiculturalism to succeed in today's society? Ala'a Wafa will discuss her personal reflections on multiculturalism, what her faith says about multiculturalism, and what we can do to embrace and thrive in the changing landscape of tomorrow's population.

December 11th 10AM, Rev. Dennis McCarty will discuss a question raised by the famous science fiction film, Blade Runner. Our First Unitarian Universalist Principle  affirms “The inherent worth and dignity of every person.” But what does it mean to be a “person,” anyway? In “What’s a Human Being?” Rev. Dennis will ponder just what it is that makes us unique among earthly life forms, but--theoretically, at least--equal to one another.

December 18th 10AM,  our service will revolve around “Stars, Children, and Other Miracles.”

Christmas is seen by many as a glorious religious miracle. But what is a miracle, anyway? Several of our youth and kids will join Rev. Dennis McCarty in a special “Service for All Ages.” We plan a kind of “divine power-point” service which will be a delight for the eyes and ears--but also for the thoughtful mind.

DON’T FORGET OUR ANNUAL CHRISTMAS EVE CANDLE-LIGHT SERVICE, December 24 at 7:00 PM, we’ll celebrate the season in our own, Unitarian Universalist way, with music from our wonderful Choir and others, and reflections gathered for the occasion by Rev. Dennis McCarty. Afterward, we’ll have snacks and warm drinks in the Fellowship Hall--maybe even some caroling. This is always one of the warmest, most festive occasions of the year.

December 25th 10AM--CHRISTMAS MORNING--we will have a very informal, yet special, Christmas morning service for people who still want to rise and shine and be with others. Rev. Dennis McCarty will read us a legendary fable from the early days of Christmas celebrations: John Ruskin’s The King of the Golden River. This story of selfishness, generosity, and triumphant virtue captures perfectly, the real theme at the center of the Christmas holidays.

January 1, 2012 10AM, we’ll start out the New Year with “A Religious Reflection on Money, Gratitude, Compassion, and Taxes.” Our culture enjoys more material wealth than any culture in the history of our planet. Yet people sure seem discontented these days. What’s missing? How do we become more content, more at peace with one another? Or is this just the way it has to be? Rev. Dennis McCarty will ponder the possibility of a New Years resolution--to these hard questions.
